BACKGROUND

Bioremediation is the use of either naturally occuring or deliberately introduced microorganisms or other forms of life to consume and break down enviromental pollutants, in order to clean up a polluted site.  The process of bioremediation looks at the whole system, the living soil communities, and aims to restore the maximum health diversity, and life.  It is an option that offers the possibility to destroy or render harmless various contaminates using natural biological activity.  As such, bioremediation uses relatively low-cost, low-technology techniques, which generally have a high public acceptance and can be carried out on site.  Scientists are looking to advance the microbes that are used in the process of removing the wastes from the soil and water contamination sites.  In a couple of years, scientists may be able to advance the microbes to be able to deteriorate the pollutants in a faster time.  The process of bioremediation can be linked back to the time of ancient romans, where they used it to clean their sewer systems.
